We have some really exciting news to share!

First Annual Super Saturday Book Drive
We had a fantastic turnout on Saturday, April 14, at the ArtsQuest Center after the Peas and Q's birthday party for the First Annual Super Saturday Book Drive to benefit Judith's Reading Room! All enjoyed an afternoon of child-centered activities including arts/crafts, story times with local celebrities, and much more -- all coordinated by Tracey Saab of the Community Warriors! Your generous donations of "gently read" and new books will help countless children in the Lehigh Valley achieve "Freedom through Literature"!

New Collaborative Partnership
On February 15, 2012, Judith's Reading Room and California-based The World is Just a Book Away announced our partnership to bring English and local language books to 27,000 children across Indonesia. We dedicated our first "library-within-a-library" of The World is Just a Book Away in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia with 125 hand-picked pre-school English-language books, valued at $1,033.

The inaugural Judith's Reading Room library is located inside the existing Miep Gies Library at the Candipari II School in Sidoarjo, East Java, located nearly 600 miles from Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The library was named in honor of Miep Gies' 100th birthday and in honor of her participation in The World is Just a Book Away Anthology edited by Professor Owens.

Miep Gies is loved around the world for her bravery in hiding Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. She saved Anne Frank's Diary, which has become one of the most widely read books in the world, and she served as an ambassador and symbol of peace and human rights worldwide for the rest of her life. February 15th would have been her 103rd birthday.

Top Award Bestowed
Selected from a pool of hundreds of applicants nationwide, Judith's Reading Room has been awarded Wells Fargo's TOP Volunteer Service Award of $25,000! Watch Cathy & Scott receive the news here. Read the Wells Fargo award press release here.

Our Largest One-day Donation
Judith's Reading Room is proud to announce that on August 16, 2011, we made our single largest one-day donation, to St. Luke's Hospital & Health Network, at a press conference in Downtown Bethlehem, PA. (Read the press release.)

Our First Year
In its first year of operation, Judith's Reading Room established five custom-designed mobile libraries with library carts in the United States and two permanent libraries in Afghanistan. The first ever war-zone library was dedicated The Judith F. Krug Memorial Library at Camp Phoenix, Kabul, Afghanistan. The first library at the Mehrabudin School in Kabul, serving 9,000, was dedicated as the result of books shipped by Judith's Reading Room. In one year, more than 11,000 books were donated, including 5,300 books shipped to American Soldiers and nearly 2,050 children's books shipped to Afghanistan.

Our First Library
On February 5, 2010, the first Judith's Reading Room mobile library was installed at the new 16-bed Pediatric Unit of Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital in Bethlehem, PA. The custom-designed book cart was packed with 317 books and audio books valued at nearly $4,000. Five members of the Liberty High School Bagpipe Section presented his or her favorite childhood book to patients and parents at the Pediatric Unit and then performed.

Books for US Military
Since December 2009, at least one box of books (and as many as five) has been shipped each week to injured American soldiers recuperating in military hospitals overseas. On average, 13 books and audio books (sports, biographies, mysteries, crime stories) and several magazines are packed into each box along with a Judith's Reading Room bookmark and a handwritten letter addressed simply to Dear Soldier.
